ARATARACH FARMERS’ COOPERATIVE SOCIETY

An inclusive development model does not merely give the most vulnerable people a voice and account for their needs; it also takes them on board as drivers of change.

Small-holder farmer members of the Aratarach Farmers’ Cooperative Society used poor cassava post-harvest handling practices, resulting in low-quality cassava chips that fetched low prices.

When they secured a United States African Development Foundation (USADF) grant and business development services from Uganda Development Trust, their fortunes significantly changed. The grant was used to address the post-harvest challenges mentioned and build infrastructure. Members’ incomes have not only doubled, but they are now food secure and sell high-quality cassava flour throughout West Nile.
